Ready for Engadinsnow by Dakine 2019: two days to go!

While I am writing, Engadinsnow is on the way to open its doors – on February 1st – for its seventeenth edition. The curtain will rise on a wonderful location casted into the unique corniche of Corvatsch in Silvaplana, Switzerland. This mountain is one of the freeride world’s cult places, perfect for hosting the Freeride World Tour Qualifier (FWQ).
The most exciting event of the week is definitely the final of theENGADINSNOW by Dakineon the North Face of Corvatsch. Anyway, as you’ll come around here, you will always find lots of activities for visitors, brand new equipment and events.

Side events and more

An unmissable event for winter sports lovers and freeriders, possible thanks to the collaboration of sponsors such as Dakine, Dynastar and Vibram just to name a few.
To complete this unforgettable weekend, you will find on the way a Vibram truck. The most famous soles of the world are now stepping aside of the coolest championship ever. On this truck you will find performance experts and designers, ready to recommend you the Vibram sole that best suites your needs. And what? And they are going to deliver you exactly that sole, applied on your favorite (winter) shoes!!!
Ok, I am a girl… I like talking about shoes. This in an article about freeriding, so let’s go on with it:

How is the Freeride World Tour born?

The first absolute competition in this discipline was the 1991 World Extreme Skiing Championship in Valdez, Alaska, which saw the legendary Doug Coombs on the highest step of the podium.
One year later, again in Alaska, a group of snowboarders organized a similar competition reserved for snowboarders. Two edges less and the result, at least in powder, does not wait to come: it was basically the snowboarders who grow attention and movement around freeride.
With this spirit, in 1996, the “Xtreme” was born in Verbier from a small group of snowboarding enthusiasts. The idea was to give visibility to the innovative and incredible show that could have been offered by the best athletes of this discipline.
The first slashes shoot directly from the helicopter did not leave any enthusiast indifferent from the beginning. From there on to the World Tour, much snow melted under the boards. In the group of the original organizers of the Xtreme there was Nicolas Hale-Wood, from which in 2008 this circuit of freeride events-races was born, always at the top and able to excite freeriders and non-freeriders.

FWT and Engadinsnow today

Today the circuit has become very large compared to the debut. There are 5 FWT races in which 50 athletes participate. These races are without a doubt the most important competitive events in the freeride world. But they only constitute the peak of a much larger pyramid. In fact, more than 60 qualifying events in the world allow riders to acquire points and eventually access the FWT. Engadinsnow is one of these.

The rules

Forget red and blue gates, forget about fitting suits and stopwatch and forget the prepared slopes.
The competitions of the Freeride World Tour are 100% held down from virgin mountains.
No rider can try the line before the event: the only inspection allowed is through binoculars or map.
Feel more free? Come freeriding to Corvatsch this week end, get some good pow (have a look at the weather forecats 🙂 and enjoy the show: ENGADINSNOWby Dakine2019!
